Old people long ago used to cut the very largest of the rushes and hang them up on the chimney to dry and season.
Then after a while they peeled the greatest portion of them except a few inches at the bottom to stick it into a turnip or a potato and when they would be seasoned they would dip them in fat.
They were used chiefly for hob-light and they called them Padóig. When they would have them dipped they should hang them very high up the chimney or the cats would eat them all.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
