Forge water will cure a disease called murrain in cattle. This water is put into a bottle and then the farmer puts it back in the throat of the sick animal.
The smiths are given bags of potatoes by farmers at Christmas and they also get presents of geese.
Many smiths were famous for curing diseases in horses. They were always considered to be very strong men. The forge has always been and is at present the local 'parliament' house.
