- When Cromwell had conquered Ireland he divided the lands of the Irish people between his followers. He gave the castle and lands of Cappoquin to an officer of his army named Captain Ivers. Ivers was hated by the people of Cappoquin and the surrounding districts because of his cruelty and his hatred of the Catholic religion. He had a guard placed in the turrets of the bridge with orders to stop every stranger entering the town without a pass. If they could not account for themselves they were thrown over the bridge. If the person tried to swim away Ivers kept two savage hounds who swam after them and pawed them down and kept them under water until they were drowned.
Ivers used to often sit at the windows of the castle and look at the surrounding country through a spyglass to watch for people coming to the town. One day while he(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
