- There are three kinds of churns. The churns that were there long ago were different to these that are there now. There are holes in the ends of the churn-barrel and the handle is put into those holes and it catches on the axle of the beaters inside. When the person begins to make the butter the beaters break the cream and it turns into butter. Long ago if any one came into a house where people would be making butter he would have to turn the churn three times. There is a cover on top of the churn and a hole in the side to leave out the milk.
