- We have a churn at home for making butter. It was made by a cooper. It is held up by a stand. There is a handle at each end of it. It takes about one hour to make the butter in the Winter time. When the glass is clear that is a sign that the butter is made. When the butter is made it is taken out and washed and then it is salted. In the Summer time the butter has to be made about three times a week, but in Winter it has only to be made once a week. There is another churn about 3 ft. high for making butter with a board at the bottom of it. There is a stick on to the board coming up through the cover with a hand on top of it. This stick is shoved up and down until the butter is made. If anyone would come into a house when the people would be making the butter he should help to make the butter and if he would not the butter could not be made.
