- I heard two men telling a funny story one night. It happened in the village of Clashmore. An old woman who was a Catholic turned Protestant, she came to live in the village and after some years died. Wishing to have all the neighbours treated well at her wake she left money enough for all sorts of refreshments. The wake-room was crowded with women and men. The men wanted to play a joke on the women, and they wanted to have all the whisky. They told the women to go for the tea in the kitchen. While they were away one of the men tied a cord around the dead woman's waist. Another of the men was outside the window standing on a ladder waiting to pull the cord. When the women came back to the wake-room they were caoining and saying what a pity she died a Protestant. The man outside the window at that moment pulled the cord and the dead woman sat up in the bed. Thinking it was the divil the women rushed from the room. Some of them fainted, and others broke their legs running down the stairs. The men got rid of them nicely and enjoyed all the good things when they were gone.
