- The potato crop is the mainstay of this country, so great care is taken in the setting of them.
In early spring, they are usually set, because they will be ripe early, but the ground has first to be prepared.
In late winter, the ground is ploughed up; then it is harrowed. They harrow it in order to break the lumps of clay, and to loosen the clay off the sods, and also to make the ground smooth, and level.
When all this work is done the potatoes that are left over for seed the year before, are cut into pieces, leaving an eye in each piece.
Women are usually employed for cutting the seed potatoes, and setting them. About three acres or so are generally sown on small(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
