  1. The by-road which is commonly known as the metals, was once a large field. In the year 1850, when the East and West piers were being built a little railway was cut through the field, which enabled the trucks of granite to run from Dalkey Quarry. In 1855, an extension from Dun-Laoghaire Station was mace to Dalkey. This extension was cut through the Metals, and laid alongside the railway for the granite. Both ran alongside each other to Dalkey and (crossing) crossed the old coach road, which is now known as Eden Road.
