- (continued from previous page)On Doonan Rock about a quarter of a mile from Donegal town the remains of an old Mass Rock is still to be seen. During the Penal Days Mass was said here. The County Council have men here now quarrying stones for road material and are coming very close on this and it would be a pity for them to destroy this old relic as it reminds of long ago how cruel the Irish had to suffer for their faith. It consists of three flat boulders, two standing upright and one across thus forming the Altar.A short distance from the old Mass Rock is a Well named from the Rock, the Rock Well. It is carved out in pure rock and its water is unsurpassed in county Donegal for purity. It was made by Red Hugh O’Donnell and it was from this Well Red Hugh got his own supply of water.
