   Bird Lore
   There are a great many wild birds in Ireland. The best known of them are; robin, thrush, blackbird, lark,corncrake,cuckoo and swallow.
   Some of these birds migrate and the others do not. The swallow, cuckoo, and corncrake migrate and the others do not. The swallow comes to Ireland for the summer and goes away for the winter, the cuckoo and corncrake do the same.
   The robin builds her nest in a grassy bank or in the side of an old ditch. The thrush builds her nest in a hedge or an ivy bush. The blackbird builds the nest in a hedge. The lark builds her nest in the ground in the heather. The corncrake builds her nest on the ground in a hay field. The swallow builds her nest in a barn or an old house.
   Little boys and girls are told no to put their hand in the nest in case they might break the eggs and make the bird forsake it.
   The robins nest is built of moss, hair and feathers she lays fine eggs of a white colour with brown spots on them. The thrushes nest is built of moss.
