   townland. There was a kind of competition to see which townland would have the biggest and most brilliant bon fire.
   This is another custom which has almost died out. Very few bonfires are to be seen on St John's Day now.

   In connection with St John's Day, I remember a strange custom which I used to see in Derry when I was a small boy. During that day, a branch of furze was suspended over the doors of many houses. Towards nightfall some young men went round the street and gathered all the furze branches. These were piled in a great heap in the middle of the street and then set on fire while the young people danced round the burning pile.
   This is another custom which has died out. It is many years now since I last saw it.
