    An "Ashfield" Gentle Bush.
    A gentle bush once grew near a dwelling house in Ashfield, Raphoe. The owner of the house wished to have it removed so that he could erect a farm on the spot. He did the work himself as none of his men would give a helping hand on account of the superstition connected with old thorn bushes of this kind. Next he built a barn and installed a threshing mill. Then when he was threshing oats one day, his right hand got entangled in the machinery and several of his fingers were torn off. This seemed to be punishment for digging out the old bush.
