When a person buys anything and agrees to pay at some future date, not having the money at time of purchase, they are said to be buying "on tick".

When a dealer makes a bargain about an animal, he very often does not pay at the time, but so that the seller will not go back on his bargain he often gives a bit of money to him.
This money is called "Earls" and some call it "Earnest" money.
