- The old houses in the district of Rush have mud walls and were thatched. The mud used was clay and straw mixed together, the walls were low, and the floor was a good distance below the level of the street. When entering these houses great care had to taken so as not be injured. A large number of these houses have disappeared, but there are still some left. The windows in the old houses are very small, one each side of the door. The floor was made with yellow clay and the front of the chimney was made of straw and clay. Formerly there was bed beside the fire in the kitchen, and was completely covered in with a sliding door where the persons head was. This bed was called a "Breadvan."Coal and wood were used for the fire, also dried cabbage butts and cow manure mixed with(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
