- Old Customs.
In Donabate, in Co. Dublin and in Ardcath in Co. Meath, it was the annual custom to hold on a July Sunday a pattern.
This is what the people did on that day. After last Mass, all the people of the parish gathered outside the church.
They had rakes, spades, and all kinds of garden tools with them and off to the graveyard they went in procession. When there they cleaned the graves of their dead friends and put flowers upon them. Then they had prayers and Benediction and a lecture from the priest and when this was over, off to the villlage green, they went and enjoyed themselves singing and dancing until night fell upon them. We do not have any in Howth and no one here ever remembers attending one in the parish.- Bailitheoir
