I have also seen him cut out a turnip into two and three rings, joined like a chain.
He often made a top out of a spool. He cuts the spool into conical shape and puts a tight fitting piece of timber through the hole. This can be spun between the finger and thumb, and will "dance" no matter which way it is turned.
He also made a top for spinning with a cord. This was made from the end of a spade handle. A nail with the head worn off was used as a "spike". The cord is wound round the top beginning at the "spike". At the end of the cord is a little round piece of leather, which is platted between two fingers. By "flegging" the top it dances round the floor or on the road.- Bailitheoir
