- The following are the chief varieties of potatoes grown in the district:-Old Champion, Striped Champion, Epicure, Golden Wonder, Kerri Pink, British Queen, Hibernian. The old Champion was by far the best variety but it is very hard to grow these now except in new land or "bán." The Hibernian is an early variety.

- When the potato stalks are about six inches high the dykes between the drills are "scuffed" in order to kill any weeds that may be froweing(?) up, and to soften the clay around the growing plant. If the year is wet it is impossible to keep down weeds. These have to be pulled by the hand. Weeders go on their knees along the dykes and pull the weeds growing on the hills especially around the stalks. after that the potatoes are "landed"(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
