    Chalk Sunday was a dreaded day. Early on that morning young garsoons armed with chalk went to the neighbourhood of the chapel gate and as the marriagable boys and girls arrived at the gate they were set upon by the youngsters and big strokes of chalk put on their backs.
    This was sometimes resented especially if the wearer's clothes were good and likely to be injured by the chalk.
    Old fellows often urged on the young lads and always gave a hard time to any confirmed bachelor.
    This custom still exists in this locality.
    St John's night is observed by the people making sheafs of straw which they called wisps and lighting them and going from field to field and shaking the sparks into the crops. The young people gather a bonfire and dance
