Máire Ní DubhgáinIn olden times the people never had any luxuries to those of the present day. In the morning they had an oaten bread and milk, the bread was made from oaten meal and water. It was baked on a griddle and it was very hard. It was baked in the shape of squares and called cants. They had their principal meal in the middle of the day.For this meal they had potatoes and milk. At this meal they ate a great deal. The table was put on the middle of the floor and they all sat round it. The vessels they used were made of timber and called noggens.In those days the people had no meat only fish the most common fish they had as herrings. The herrings were roasted on a tongs and then they were put into milk on a plate. In those days the people have meat for their dinner every day. The people had another meal which they called flummery water. Oaten meal was steeped for a night till it became sour then the people drank the water off it this they called flummery water. In olden times the people boiled potatoes, then they mixed(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
