- Long ago the people were a fine healthy race in comparison to the people of nowadays. They eat plenty of fine wholesome food. There were hardly any doctors in those times and few hospitals. The old people used to set charms and cure the sick but all that is done away with now. The people in those days were contented enough to have their fill of potatoes skim - milk or butter milk. They had no tea because it was scarce and dear. They used to drink milk and mugs of croudy and eat cants of oaten bread and a cake made from scraped potatoes baked in a griddle. When people long ago drank a cup of tea at Christmas it was a luxury to them. They never eat a currant cake because there were no currants in the country at that time as ships were not so safe. They used to be glad to eat indian maize gruel for their breakfast and were happy to have it. In those days an extra sixpence meant as much as riches.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
