    (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)
Hurling was a very common pastime in Ireland long ago. A great match was played in a field owned by Mr Smyth of Carraroe, about sixty years ago. A team consisted of fourteen men, seven on each side, and two goalkeepers and a referee. Sometimes goal posts were used and others used a net. This game was played by the parish of Williamstown versus Glenamaddy, Williamstown one goal three points. The ball generally used is a hard one no bigger than a common hand ball.
James Burke of Ballyglass was a famous hurler in the Williamstown team and it was by his aid the game was won. A famous weight-thrower lived in Glensk named John Kelly. He was about seven feet high and he practised weight-throwing. He could take a large tree under his arm, and once when they failed to pull a load he pulled the cart with two ton of stones up a hill. He had but one hand.
