- In the Penal times all the priests were afraid of Cromwell to read Mass. for the people and on this account they went to the lonely please and hollow and these places were known as "Clais na n-Aifreann." There was a Mass rock in Martin McDermott's garden in Williamstown where Father Curran was reading Mass there when Cromwells' soldiers passes there. As they passed by "Clais na n-Aifreann," all their heads were turned to the other side of the road they went own their way to Glenamaddy until the priest escaped and went to the "Clais na n-Aifreann" in Poll na Nuadhain.
There was also a Mass rock in Maurice Mitchells field in Leatra and in Ned Gibbon's field in KIlbeg. These places were afterwards used in as a burial place for unbaptized infants and are now surrounded by little hills.
