During the Penal Days there was a very cruel enemy of the Catholics living in Manorhamilton. His name was Carney Cross Cullen and he had a body of men and they were known as the "Shanagans." Cullen and his men were pursuing a Catholic Curate that lived in Manorhamilton to kill him. One day They were coming out of the road, that leads to Glencar and Cullen suddenly saw the priest walking up and down inside of the road ditch reading his office. Cullen pointed him out to the Shanagans and told them to attack him at once but not one of them could see him and consequently the priest was not attacked. Soon after that Cullen had a conversation with the curate and the former said "I could catch you on Monday only that my men couldn't see you."
