- In Ballaghmeehan in the year 1900 I saw Rush candles made by Johnston Clarke Ballaghmeehan. He had a little metal pot which he called a "cám". It was boatshaped and had three legs. He put multon far into this and [?] it over coals. While it was melting he peeled green rushes leaving a strip unpeeled. He then caught the rush by the ends and drew it in and out a few times through the grease. They were then left to dry and when wanted for use were placed in a "sconce" which was [?] a block of wood then an upright piece of metal with a split on the point of it into which the rush was put and lighted. They gave off a very poor light but I often saw him milking and foddering cattle by its light.
