- About forty years ago there was a lime kiln in use in Patrick McTiernan's land in the townland of Tullynapurtlin in the parish of Ballinglera, Co. Leitrim.
The old kiln is to be seen there yet. It was a very mall one. It was about four feet wide and five feet deep.
It was used for burning limestone for use on land only. Limestone was very scarce and men had to carry it from one and a half to three miles on their backs in a creel.
The limestone was broken into small pieces and put into the kiln over a turf fire. Then alternate layers of turf and broken limestone were put in until the kiln was full. Then it was covered over with a number of green sods and left there until the limestone was burned out. A
