St.John’s Day.
St.John’s Day falls on the 24th June. On the Eve of St.John’s day the people light a fire in honour of St.John. The night on which the fire is lit is called the “bonfire night”. While this fire is burning the people stay at it.
“Whit Sunday”
Whit Sunday is one of the moveable feasts. It is said that no one should go near lakes or rivers during Whit Week.
It is said that a man named Thos. McPartland was fishing in “poll-cam” on Whit Sunday and he fell in and was drowned. It is also said that two more men were with him and that a lot of men rose out of the water and followed them till they were at home. They were F.McPartland and P.Flynn of Upper Annagh. It is said that they
were not the same since. It is said that a calf a month old on Whit Sunday will be cross.
“Good Friday”
Good Friday is one of the moveable feasts. It is a day of mourning and everything is covered with black. Long ago it was a black fast day. The people drank black(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
