    was made of three boards thus 1. The handle had one knife edge. The flax was placed across the stool and scutched with the handle. The flax
    was made into hanks and sent to the hackler.
    The hackler had a frame made with iron hooks in it. He stood before the frame with a hank in each hand. He threw the hanks into the frame and pulled them through the hooks. He thus separated the shoves from fibre. Shoves means
    the coating of the flax. It was then made ready for the Carder for the spinning wheel. Scutching is common to-day as ropes are made from rushes.
