- A churn is a very useful article. It is made up of wooden staves, which are bound together by iron hoops. It is five feet in height and two and half feet in width. It is curved int he middle which is called the "peck", to prevent your knees from hitting against the churn. it is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom.
When the milk is thick it is put into th churn, the dash is put into it also in through a hole in the middle of the lid. The dabbler is put on top of the lid, the handle of the dash is put through a hole in the dabbler, which is to prevent the milk from splashing out when you are churning.
A pinch of salt is thrown on the lid in the name of the Father Son and Holy Ghost, this is done for good luck.
