    planks placed on two blocks of wood. There was only one teacher in this school Mr Purcell, a native of Cork. He lodged near the school. He was paid every Friday evening.
    Irish and English were the only subjects taught, Irish was spoken by master and pupils. The teacher wrote on a large stone flag placed against a wall : the pupils wrote on slates.
    Mr Purcell taught in that school from 1844 to 1879 . Told by Mrs Quill of Derrindaff.

  2. In the olden days it was said that in a protestant house built near Listowel graveyard many persons used to gather to play cards.
    One night the man of the house went out riding &on his way back was overtaken by a stranger on horseback. They became friends & the stranger was invited to join the company at home at a game of cards. He did so and it was noted that the stranger won all the time.
    The cards of one of the players fell on the ground & in stooping to pick them up he noticed
