- The night of the big wind took part on the 6th January 1839. The wind was blowing from the west and it blew the herrings off Sligo to Mong and Shemore hills. They were found by Hugh Rourke in the morning. The clothes that were on the lines were torn into rags and were found miles away and were turned red. The people said it was red wind.
