- There were very poor houses in olden times. The walls were built of clay and sods and rushes. These walls were called mud walls and some of them exist to the present day. The mud was dug out of a hillside and the big holes are to be seen yet. The mud was wet and rushes were mixed with it so that when the mud dried it would not crumble away. At the turf cutting the people lifted oak sticks in the bog to roof the houses. They also dug big sods to put on the roof before the thatch. These sods were called "scraws". The wet clay and rushes were mixed with a graipe and it was also put on the walls with a Graipe. They thatched the houses with rushes and heather. There was only(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
