- (continued from previous page)this fire as he thought they were a crowd of tramps. When he reached the fire each person took a coal out of the fire in their hand and vanished into the heather of the mountain so that he had not as much as a spark to light his pipe.
He travelled on for a few perch but then he was seized by this gnawing hunger, so much so, that he lay down along the road. When he was about half an hour in this position one of the strangers who were gathered round the fire came back with a coal still in his hand and said "here light your pipe" but the traveller said that he was not able to smoke now. They other then said "take this piece of oaten bread it will help you" handing him a small piece of oaten bread. He disappeared on the instant with the coal. The traveller ate the bread and felt quite strong again.
He went on his way to Belturbet. He made sure that he would return before dark. When he came to the spot where the fire(continues on next page)
