- There were very little country shops there long ago. The people at that time used to go to the town for their goods. These people used to bring their goods in a hamper up on their backs. The people of the shops used to sell very small things. They used sell one pound of sugar and one ounce of tea and penny loaves of bread. They used also sell one ounce or a half an ounce of tobacco, or sometimes one penny worth of rat-tail tobacco. The people of the little shops in the villages used to sell tobacco and matches and other small things after mass on Sundays. When the people used to be buying their goods they would not always have money. They used to pay for them with work and more of them used to wait until they would get money.
