- In former times people were very old when they got any boots to wear. Sometimes they were near thirty years. At that time it was a usual thing to see boys and girls going off to school even in winter with bare feet. In summer some children still go bare-footed to school but not in winter. Shoe-makers were to be seen in every district in ancient times but when machines made boots and got plentiful the poor shoe-makers disappeared almost.
