1. Old Houses

   

   Roinn Roinn Postáil

   Thatched houses that were common in Ireland in olden times. They were built of clay and dab. and the walls were about 1 foot and a half wide. The roofs were slanted and thatched with straw. Every old house had a bed in the kitchen and there was a place left for it in the wall and was called a poock bed. There was a fireplace in every house. In some houses the fireplace was on the gable of the house and in more houses it was in the centre of the house. Every house had one or two very small windows in it. The floors were made of clay or dab and they used to ravel and holes used to come in them. Half doors were very common in Ireland long ago. They were used to keep out the hens and ducks. People in olden times used to cut a lot of turf for burning and they used to burn sticks too. Most of the people in olden times used to have no light but the fire and they used to have a lantern with a half a candle in it for going
