  1. Bread.
Long ago the kind of bread that was used in the district was wheaten bread, barley bread, and oatmeal bread. Querns were very common in the district in former days. They were very useful articles when the people had no other means of grinding.
Stampy was also some of the food people used to eat. In every house there was always an article called a grater and this was fastened to the table by a nail. Then potatoes were pealed and grated, and then the grated potatoes were put into a cloth and the water was squeezed out of them. Then flour was mixed with what remained in the cloth; it was then kneaded and baked and then eaten.
Bread was baked every day and milk was always used in the kneading of it. The loaf of bread was marked with a cross and it is said it was a help to bake the bread.
