- There is the ruin of an old house in one of our fields. This house belonged to a man Paddy Kennedy my great grandfather. he was living in the house a long time when he died. At that time it was from Tralee the people of the district used get the wake conveniences.
Paddy Kennedy's people went to Tralee for a coffin and other things. A box of clay pipes were brought because clay pipes and tobacco were familiar at wakes at that time.
The boxes of that time contained 120 pipes and often the wake fifty must be spared. All that were spared were buried twenty feet east of the house. Last May the pipes were dug up after being there 10 years. On the head of one of the pipes was "P Devane Tralee" and on the stem of the pipe was "Derry"
It was at "P Devanes" the pipes were bought. The P Devane mentioned had a shop in "Castle St Tralee" and got broken up. He was afterwards role collector in the district and was succeeded by Johnny MacMahon about thirty years ago.
One of the pipes found by my brother is in school as I brought it to the master.
