There was a man there long ago, and he commited a most awful crime, So he was to be hanged...

There was a man there long ago, and he commited a most awful crime, So he was to be hanged. The day of the hanging the judge told him that if he would make up a riddle he would forgive him. That man asked the judge how long would he give him. "Three years", answered the judge. So the man went home. About a week the man had a mare that was going to foal, and she died. So he opened the mare, and saved the fole. He raired the foal as a pet and he went to the court. The judge was on the bench, and he called him in. "No", said the man, "come down let you". So out went the two men. "Here is a horse that never had a mother, and here is the gam in my hand, and under earth I am". Then the man explained it to the judge.
