- Years ago it was the custom (on the 23rd of June) in the Parish of Ahamlish that every family used to light a big bonfire in honour of St John.
When the fire was blazing, the father or mother or the oldest person present used to give out the Rosary.
They kept walking round the fire while reciting the Rosary.
When the Rosary was said there was usually a dance.
When all was over, a coal from the bonfire was put into the garden, another into the potato field, and another into the meadow.
It was believed that by doing this, the crops would be very good the following year.- Bailitheoir
