Some were thatched with rushes and more were thatched with straw. There were no slates in olden times. It is only in those late years slates were procured from foreign countries. The houses in olden times had a bed in the kitchen and this was called a 'pooch' bed. It was always in a corner one side of the fire place. The fire place was always in the gable. I havent seen any old houses where the fire place was in the side wall. The chimneys were made of mortar in some houses but others were made of wattles, and(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
