- In the parish of Keel there were very few barrels for making butter. Everybody had a churn. The cream was put into the churn then everybody in the house should strike the churn as there was an old superstition that people used to steal the butter. Everybody who came to the house during the churning should put their hand in the churn staff. Holy water was sprinkled around the house. Several neighbours gathered to fill the "firkins" of butter. The firkins were sent to Cork. The butter was measured with wooden mugs.
