- Composition: " On local Landlords"
Collis Sandes was the name of the landlord who owned our land. He was a nephew to Maurice and he gave the lands to him. Maurice Sandes was a judge in India and he bought the estate from Batemen. Bateman opposed O Connell in Clare when O Connell was fighting the election but O Connell had his revenge for he succeeded in making a pauper of Bateman. Bateman lost most of his money fighting the election and he had to sell his lands to Sandes.
When Sandes got the land he raised the rent by six times. The people had cheap lands under Bateman but Sandes made it very high. Bill Daniel's father had to pay £84 for his land that cost him £14 before.
Sandes was a very hard landlord and did his best to make Protestants of the Catholics around. His agent Batt Connor of Fealesbridge was a great tyrant too. It was to his place the soupers came to read the bible. Those who refused were evicted and their lands were given to O Connor's well wishers.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
