  1. Setting potatoes in Ridges.
    If it is in ridges the potatoes are to be planted they must be planted in land which was not tilled the previous year. This land is called bawn. At first he places a hemp line along the ground the length of the space of ground and then he cuts the ground with a spade to a depth of about two inches and he holds cutting in this manner till he has all the ground cut. The distance between two cutting is about five feet. After this is done a couple turn what is called taobh fhod. Every man turn two sods as he goes along and these sods are ten inches or a foot long (long) wide. When the ground is all turned it is left there for abut a week or fortnight to rot the green of the sods and then the sods are turned out with a pike and the manure is spread along the centre of the ridge and the seed are spread either int wo or three rows about a foot apart and the sods are again turned in and the furrows are dug with a plough and the earth is put upon the centre of the ridge and they are left that way until the stalks begin to peep up and then they are trenched.
    If drills are used to set potatoes the land must be under tillage the year before. Drills are usually made in land that was under corn the previous year and this land is called stubbles. The ground is at first ploughed and then harrowed three or four times and the drills are
