generous to his tenants than before. The failure of the potatoes caused hunger and starvation to become very prevalent. Whole families perished in many places. It was at this time that maze meal was introduced into this country. It was largely used as as food by the people and not knowing how to cook it for human use it was often used in a half raw state causing injury to health and body.
From eighteen forty seven to eighteen eighty the people had to live on the class of rare described when the government of that day introduced a new variety of potatoes called the champion. This variety grew in great abundance and was a very good potato for table use. Money also became plentiful owing to the land agitation forcing the landlords to reduce the rents by nearly a half.
