I have only heard of it been placed at the gable wall at the end of the house on the centre wall.The chimneys were made of stones and morther and wood which was called a brace. Some of the houses had no chimneys of stones or bricks, but there was an old barrel placed on top of the house to let away the smoke, which they used as a chimney.The houses long ago had no windows but they had square holes in the wall with shutters on them. Sometimes the people had no time to make shutters but they filled the holes with hay or straw.The old floors that were long ago, were made of clay and stones.
