1. Old Schools

   There was a hedge school set up long ago, during my grandfather's school days, near "Cunnin's Chapel", beside the road, at the back of the ditch. The townland was Drumsloe, Every morning the scholars went to school. They were seated in a circle on sods. The field belonged to a neighbour of ours - named Conlon.
   There were local teachers who taught in these schools. No school was carried on in the farmers' houses. At night the master slept in one of his pupil's houses.
   Each family brought 2d every week, and paid the master for their weeks learning, and on this he lived.
   Some of the subjects taught were Irish, Arithmetic, History, Reading, Grammar and Geography. Irish was spoken but very little.
