    It is round in shape, about a foot in diameter. It is perforated with round holes, some big, some small, to allow the milk to dash through. I think it is made of sycamore. Some people say that if the churn dash is made out of the rowan tree it gives a pleasing taste to the milk and butter.
    If a neighbour comes into the house while the churning is in progress, it is the custom in this locality for the neighbour to take a "brash" at (that) the churn. It is thought that if he does not take a "brash" that he does not wish the milk or the butter to be lucky, and some people go so far as to believe, that there are people, who have the power to take the butter of their neighbour's milk and bring it to their own. This is called witchcraft. I heard the teacher say that he knows a case where the people of a house churned for two and three hours, and still not butter came on the milk.
    We churn once a week and then we have butter and buttermilk for that week. We use the buttermilk for making bread, and it also makes a refreshing and healthy drink especially during the summer months.
    The churn dash is always moved upwards and downwards, but when the churning is nearly finished, we give it a rolling motion, round
