Long ago people around here had to pay tithes to the protestant minister in Kilmeague. whose name was Preston. Bailiffs called tithe procters used to go around gathering the money. Anyone who would not pay the money a cow or a horse was taken from him and sold at the "cant" in Kilmeague, which was a kind of auction to make the money. It was always Protestants who bought at the "cant". Mr Thornton's grandfather of Ballyteague was a tithe gatherer and he and Fr. O'Reilly, the parish of Allen, at that time fought at the priests gate because he was taking the priests cow for tithes, and that ended the tithe(continues on next page)
