    Shamrock.
Hugh went home and got a lantern and started out for the river. When he had gone a long way he heard something behind him. It was Liffey the dog. After a long while they reached the river. Hugh lit the lantern and began to search for the shamrock. At last he saw a piece between two rocks.
When he was stooping down to pick it up he heard something in the water. The water splashed and the lantern went out. He saw a huge creature in the water. All around the river the ground was one great sinking mass. Hugh called and called for Liffey but the little dog had disappeared. The huge creature need have taken him and eaten him.
So from that day to this the river is called Liffey.
