Respect for the dead is a most noteworthy quality in the district. No time is taken into account nor is anything considered too dear to get for using on the occasion of a death.
Preparations are made beforehand in all houses for an event of the kind. The "big box" always contains a lay out of clean sheets, generally linen, a white counterpane or quilt. These are stock for the occasion and are never used till another death in the house.
When news of a death goes round, all work in the district immediately around the house ceases, and only very necessary work such as milking is carried on.
The "Corpse house" is still a going concern in this district. The women generally dress up early and visit the house. They stay about an hour and leave room for others. The main idea is not to leave the people of the house alone for even a half hour.
